Wholesale Reception Desk: What Distributors Should Confirm Before Ordering？

Last year, a Dubai buyer ordered 12 L-shaped desks — 6 arrived with the return on the wrong side because the PO just said ‘L-shape. A reception desk is the first piece visitors touch. It’s also one of the pieces most often ordered wrong — wrong length, wrong return side, power holes in the wrong place, or a color that doesn’t match the lobby wall.

If you buy wholesale for projects or retail stock, the photo is the least useful part of the quote. The useful part is the checklist below.
Start with the wall and the door, not the catalog. Measure the clear wall length, door swing, and the distance from the wall to the nearest walkway. An L-shape that looked perfect in a showroom can block the entrance if the return is on the wrong side. Mark left-return or right-return on the PO. Don’t leave it as “L-shape.”
Decide what the desk has to hold. Many buyers only think about the front counter. Staff need: a place for a PC or laptop, a drawer for keys and visitor badges, cable access, and sometimes a low cabinet for printers. If storage is an afterthought, installers end up stacking boxes under the desk — which looks cheap and slows service.
Height matters more than people admit. A common front counter sits around 1050–1100 mm so standing visitors can sign in without bending. The inner worktop is usually desk height (~750 mm). If your market prefers a single-level desk, say so early. Mixed-height desks cost more to customize but feel more professional in corporate lobbies.

Cable and power: put them on the drawing. Floor boxes, wall outlets, and the position of the monitor arm should be known before production. Asking the factory to “add some holes later” usually means field drilling on site — messy, and it voids tidy edge finishes.
Material and grade. For commercial lobbies, melamine-faced boards with E0 or E1 emission grade are common on export projects. Ask for board thickness on the top and on the front panel separately. A thick-looking photo can still ship with a thin carcass. Edge banding quality shows up first on reception desks because people lean on the corners.
Color matching. Lobby stone, paint, and lighting change how wood grain looks. If you already have a sample board or a RAL/wood-grain code from a previous phase, send it. “Light oak” without a code is how you get two different oaks across two shipments.
Packaging for wholesale. Knock-down packaging saves freight; fully assembled units arrive faster on site but cost more to ship and are easier to damage in transit. For multi-unit wholesale orders, ask for carton marks that match your project codes — it saves hours when containers open.
MOQ and mixed orders. Project buyers often need one reception desk plus a few matching side cabinets. Factory-direct suppliers who accept mixed / trial orders make this easier.
