Executive Desk Specs That Survive Real Office Use (Not Just Showroom Photos)
Showroom executive desks are lit from three angles and never hold a full day’s paperwork. Real offices do. If you’re buying boss desks for a project or for wholesale stock, judge the spec sheet harder than the hero photo.
Size first. A desk that looks large online can still be too shallow for dual monitors plus a laptop stand. Common commercial depths sit around 700–800 mm; widths vary widely — from compact manager desks to full CEO suites with side cabinets. Measure the room, the chair clearance behind, and the door path. A 2.0 m desk in a 2.4 m office leaves almost no walkway once the chair is pulled out.
Structure. Panel-end desks and metal-frame desks fail differently. Panel ends look solid and hide cables well; metal frames can feel lighter and are easier to knock down for export. Ask how the top is fixed, whether the return cabinet shares the same leveling system, and if the desk can take a monitor arm without flexing. Soft tops that bounce under typing are a common complaint after cheap builds.
Storage layout. Side cabinets and pedestals change the footprint. Buyers often approve the main desk dimensions, then add a return and discover it no longer fits the wall. Quote overall assembled size with storage included. Note drawer locks if the office handles cash, stamps, or confidential files.
Cable management is not optional on executive desks. Power strips taped to the underside look bad in a client-facing office. Grommets, rear trays, and access to floor boxes should be decided with the layout. If the user videoconferences daily, leave clear space for camera height and cable exit toward the wall — not toward the guest chairs.
Board grade and finish. Export projects usually specify E0 or E1 melamine-faced boards. Confirm thickness on the top. Dark high-gloss finishes show fingerprints; wood-grain matte finishes hide wear better in daily use. Match finish codes across the desk, credenza, and meeting table if they sit in the same room.
Custom size and OEM branding. Many distributors need a catalog model with small changes — 50 mm shorter, different drawer configuration, logo on the pedestal. Factories that support OEM/ODM can do this, but only if the changes are written before production starts. Verbal “make it a bit like the photo” is how samples and bulk diverge.
Shipping and installation. Executive desks often ship in multiple cartons. Confirm whether hardware is bagged per set, whether an exploded drawing is included, and whether your local team or the supplier’s guidance covers installation. Damaged corners on a dark desk are expensive to repair on site.
