Workstation Layouts That Actually Fit the Floor Plan

Most workstation problems don't start on the production line. They start when someone orders a four-person cluster for a room that already has a column in the middle and a door that swings the wrong way.
We've seen this enough times to know the pattern. A buyer sends a floor plan with rough dimensions, picks a workstation model from a catalog photo, and assumes the factory will "make it work." Sometimes we can. Often it means last-minute changes to partition height, desk depth, or cable routing — changes that cost time on both sides.

If you're planning an office fit-out or sourcing workstations for a distributor project, here's what actually helps before you place a PO.
Mark the immovable items first. Doors, windows, columns, sprinkler heads, and main power outlets should be on the drawing before anyone talks about desk sizes. A standard 1.2 m deep workstation looks fine on paper until you realize the walkway behind the chairs needs 900 mm and the fire exit path is already tight.
Walkway width is the detail people skip. For daily use, allow at least 900 mm between desk edges where people pass behind seated staff. In high-traffic aisles — routes to meeting rooms or copiers — 1,200 mm is more comfortable and often closer to what local building codes expect. Tighter than that, and you get chair collisions and complaints within the first month.

Two-person, four-person, and six-person clusters each solve different problems. Two-person setups work in narrow rooms or along window lines where you want more natural light per person. Four-person clusters are the workhorse for open-plan zones: good density, shared cable management, easier to align in rows. Six-person and larger modular blocks make sense when the room is wide and you want fewer partition runs, but they reduce flexibility if headcount shifts later.
Partition height matters more than people think. A 1.1 m screen gives a visual break without blocking light. Screens around 1.4–1.5 m add privacy for phone calls and reduce visual distraction, but they can make a room feel boxed in if ceiling height is low. For call-heavy teams, higher partitions help. For collaborative teams, lower is usually better.
Cable management should be decided with the layout, not after. Floor boxes, wall power, and desk-mounted grommets need to line up with where the desktops actually sit. If your project uses sit-stand frames or mobile pedestals, confirm whether cable trays are included or quoted separately — that's a common gap on commercial quotes.
Storage changes the footprint. Side cabinets and mobile pedestals add width. A workstation that fits on a blank plan may not fit once each person has a pedestal and a shared low cabinet at the end of the row. Ask for overall dimensions with storage included, not just the desk shell.
For OEM and ODM projects, send the floor plan with scale, note ceiling height, and list how many staff per zone. Photos of existing offices help too — especially if you're matching a previous phase. The more specific the brief, the fewer surprises at installation.
